May’s Discovery Drop Unboxed

May's Discovery Box was focused on the natural elements: water and rust. We included a trio of brand new Liquid Pigments from Green Stuff World, designed to create realistic rust effects. The set offers a good range of rust colours and the washes dry powdery to look like real rust. To practice this technique, we created a Rusting Hammer Tile - an ancient weapon embedded in the ground and left to decay long ago.

For our second trio of paints, we included a set from Miniature Paint (MP) acrylics, which is created by Gamescraft. These are very affordable paints in large pots and a range of fantasy colours, produced here in the UK. We picked three paints that worked well together to create a range of depth to your water effect. For this tutorial, we designed a tile that looked like a Bubbling Well, perfect as terrain in a fantasy game after painting it!

Finally, we had two fun additives from INSTAR paint. The Gloss+ was really helpful for adding a sheen to the water effect, and the Metal+ can be used to mix with other acrylic paints to turn them into metallics. This excellent medium is a great addition to your paint collection. That way if you have a colour that you really like, you can turn it metallic or pearlescent for a particular colour scheme.
